SOUTHAMPTON — After residents and officials voiced concern over safety, the state Department of Transportation plans to install a traffic light at the intersection of Route 10 and Pomeroy Meadow Road next year.

Town officials sent a letter to the state agency in April requesting that it study whether a traffic signal would improve safety at the busy intersection after hearing from several residents at a public hearing on the matter.

While the DOT determined the intersection did not meet national standard requirements for a signal that stops traffic, the agency decided that a “warning beacon” would be appropriate. The light will flash red to warn Pomeroy Meadow Road motorists of the stop sign ahead and flash yellow on Route 10 (College Highway), according to Town Administrator Heather Budrewicz.

The installation of the signal will be added to the work planned for the state-funded Safe Routes to School project, which will break ground in early spring.

That project includes the construction of a sidewalks from Pomeroy Meadow Road to Cumberland Farms and the installation of a crosswalk in that area of College Highway.
