It took two sets, but the Easthampton girls volleyball team figured it out.
The Eagles lost their first two sets but came back to beat Mahar 16-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-7 in Orange on Wednesday.
“We just really didn’t show up until that third set,” Easthampton coach Molly Jacobson said. “We couldn’t serve the ball.”
Autumn Pinard finished with five aces to go along with 12 assists and five digs for Easthampton (3-1).
Lisa Sikop led the team with 10 kills and also had two aces.
Sammy Sypek contributed 12 digs and two aces, while Sierra Raskevitz had 11 digs and three kills.
“It was nice that they didn’t give up,” Jacobson said. “They really persevered and played with a lot of heart.”
Southwick 3, Smith Vocational 1 — Desyaneria Padilla had seven assists, five aces and two digs in a 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 home loss.
Cassandra Paradee added five kills and four aces, while Avalon Darby had seven assists, four aces and three digs for Smith Vocational (0-3, 0-2 Metro).
Belchertown 3, Athol 1 — Cara McKenzie had 12 kills in the Orioles’ 14-22, 25-22. 25-21, 25-21) road win.
Cassidy Genereux had 10 assists, while Sarah Woodford dropped in four aces for Belchertown (4-0).
South Hadley 3, Mohawk 0 — Kiana Turner had nine aces and five kills to lead the Tigers in a road win.
Morgan Adams dished out six assists, while Kaylyn Labrecque had two kills and three blocks for South Hadley (2-1).
Frontier Regional 4, Turners Falls 1 — McKenzie Patterson scored twice from Ashley Borkowski in the Red Hawks’ win.
Lilli Powers tallied the only goal of the first half on an assist from Kimmie Asseng.
Olivia Vecellio capped the scoring assisted by Lauren McDonald.
Skyla Burniske stopped two shots in the Frontier (3-1) net.
Northampton 3, East Longmeadow 0 — The Blue Devils (3-0) kept rolling on the road, beating the Spartans.
Megan McCarthy, Anna Kerwood and Abigael Baldwin all scored for Hamp.
Danielle Parent made two saves in goal.
Monson 1, Granby 0 — Zach Gorham made 12 saves, but the Rams couldn’t find the net at home against Monson.
Granby (2-2) had free kicks late in the second half to put pressure on the Mustangs, the team that knocked them out of the postseason last year.
Monson scored in the 44th minute.
“We definitely hope to have a chance to meet them again in the tournament,” Granby coach Todd Dorman said.
Athol 2, Easthampton 0 — Drew Caires made eight saves in a home loss.
Tyler Karakula and Franny Fuhrmann created chances in the first half, while Nicolas Soucy and Fernando Tenesaca had chances in the second half for Easthampton (1-2, 1-2 Schmid).
Commerce 3, South Hadley 1 — Alex Lerch opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Commerce scored the next three goals to take down the Tigers.
Nehemiah Wilson made six saves for South Hadley (0-4).
Williston 3, Cheshire Academy 1 — Anna Weed had two goals, as the Wildcats opened the season with a home win.
Elin Blomquist also scored, while Alana Serafino had four saves for Williston (1-0).
