NORTHAMPTON — Osaka Japanese Restaurant was open for business Saturday after being evacuated the night before for a sprinkler system issue.

The restaurant on Old South Street was closed Friday evening after the eatery’s sprinkler system was inadvertently activated Friday evening, according to fire officials.

Northampton Fire and Rescue was called to the scene at 7:53 p.m. after “several” patrons were sprayed with a chemical fire-extinguishing agent that came from above the grills, Captain Mark Curtin said Friday.

One person was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital as a precaution and everyone was evacuated from the building, he said. The condition of the person taken to the hospital was unknown Saturday.

Curtin said that the scene was cleared by about 9:45 p.m., although the Board of Health was called in to ensure cleanup was executed properly. Officials, he said, would work through the night with the goal of re-opening the restaurant to patrons in the morning.

There was no reported fire inside the restaurant, nor were there any reported injuries, he added.

The captain said the sprinkler system was activated after a release pin was nudged by someone pushing a cart.
