Drivers who use the Massachusetts Turnpike can expect delays through most of November as contractors demolish existing toll plazas to make way for an all-electronic toll system that launched last Friday.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials said 15 mph speed limits will be imposed at theย 23 construction zones along Interstate 90, with construction expected to last until Nov. 22 as work crews demolish center areas and reconstruct roadways.

On Saturday, officials said, temporary lane assignments were set up along I-90 as demolition got underway.

Crews began demolition workย early Monday morning at the Sturbridge, Millbury/Worcester, Natick and Framingham locations, according to the MassDOT.

Under the new all-electronic system, drivers without E-ZPass transponders will receive a billย in the mail. Because of a six-month grace period between now and May, commuters who receive a notice in the mail will be credited for the difference between the pay by plate and E-ZPass rates, DOT said. E-ZPass rates are cheaper.

Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin said during a press conference Monday morning that, so far, 13 of the 23 toll booth locations have been demolished. The remaining booths are expected to come down by the end of the day Tuesday.

Tinlin also said that Monday morningโ€™s commute saw a 6 to 10 percent reduction in traffic volume.

โ€œThe real credit goes to the traveling public,โ€ Tinlin said. โ€œI think the message has been heard, at least for (Mondayโ€™s) commute โ€ฆย that the best is to either alter your work schedule, maybe take public transportation (and find) another means to get to where youโ€™re going.โ€
