Johnny McCarthy scored 20 points for the Amherst College men’s basketball team in a 75-64 win over Anna Maria Monday night in Paxton.
Amherst (3-0) held off a Anna Maria (0-4) comeback attempt midway through the second half.
With the lead down to six points, Amherst responded with a 8-0 run to make it 58-44 with 13 minutes, 25 seconds left.
Amherst led 39-30 at halftime.
Jacob Nabatoff and Jayde Dawson each scored 12 points for Amherst. Dawson led the team with eight assists.
Amherst 168, Wesleyan 108 — Jack Koravos (50 and 100 freestyles), Craig Smith (50 and 100 backstrokes), Sam Spurrell (50 and 100 flies) and Josh Chen (50 and 100 breaststrokes) were all double winners as Amherst won on the road.
Aidan Winn (Florence) placed third in the 500 free (4:55.28) for the Cardinals.
Amherst 184, Wesleyan 103 — Bridgitte Kwong won the 400-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, Natalie Rumpelt won the 200 freestyle and 100 free, and Katie Smith took the 50 butterfly and 100 breaststroke as Amherst won on the road.
Maela Whitcomb (Northampton) placed third in the 400 IM in 4:54.18 for the Cardinals.
