GRANBY — A dedication ceremony will be held Saturday as Granby becomes a Purple Heart Town.

The event begins at 9 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts at the Granby American Legion at 74 Pleasant St. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

The military medal is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are injured or killed while serving in combat. It is one of the most recognized medals in the armed forces and was first introduced by George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit in 1782.

According to the Boston Globe, Purple Heart Town designations have been adopted by communities across the United States as part of an effort by a national veterans group, the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
