DEERFIELD — Three people were sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being involved in a head-on collision on Routes 5 and 10 late Friday morning.

According to Deerfield Police Chief John Paciorek Jr., a Jeep Compass traveling south on Routes 5 and 10 crossed over the yellow double solid line into the opposing travel line, striking a Buick Century head-on. Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage, but extrication of the occupants was not necessary.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. near the intersection with Wapping Road.

Paciorek said the operator of the Buick and his wife were both transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield — one for possible fractures — while the female operator of the Jeep was brought to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. Paciorek said he did not know the severity of the victims’ injuries, but said he was told they are non-life threatening.

The road was shut down near the scene of the crash for about half an hour while the wreck was cleared.

Deerfield and Whately police, South County EMS, MedCare Ambulance and the Deerfield Fire Department responded.
