NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton boys indoor track and field team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday.

The Blue Devils lost 69-26 to Holyoke during the early session of the PVIAC league meet at Smith College.

Hamp competed without Ben Gordon-Sniffen, Cole Lavalle, Patrick Quinlan and Nik Smith. The group will run at the New Balance Grand Prix on Saturday and the MSTCA Coaches Invitational on Sunday. Both are held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

For Smith, his senior year at Northampton got off to a rough start when he separated his shoulder during the football season, causing him to miss three games.

“It was definitely rough because I’ve never had any injury of that caliber before, so it kind of struck me at first and I was a bit devastated,” Smith said about missing games in his final season of football.

Smith has recovered from his injury and believes he’s in a good position to achieve his goals for the winter track season.

“I think it’s been going pretty good,” Smith said. “I haven’t really had any breakout performances thus far, but I think that’s kind of where I should be at this point. I don’t think I really need to make big moves in the early part of the season.”

Though he may not consider it a breakout performance, Smith did set a 300-meter Pioneer Division record on Jan. 6 in 35.54 seconds, though he thinks he could have done even better if he faced Amherst Regional’s Andre Shepard.

“I think I would have been able to run a faster time with him in that race because he’s a very good competitor, always good to run with him,” Smith said. “But I think that I was definitely pleased with my performance running without him. I think that really shows that I’m where I should be at this point in the season.”

Competing in Boston will soon be a regular event for Smith. In the fall he will join the Boston University track and field team.

“I’m very excited. I think it will be great to be in a new environment, have a new group of training partners, and really be getting myself in tune to the college environment,” Smith said.

The family atmosphere the Terriers have created made BU the right fit for Smith.

“What stood out to me the most is probably the team, how they’re so tight-knit,” Smith said. “They’re a very fun and funny group of individuals. They’re very nice and they really kind of made me feel like a part of their family, and I think I really liked that aspect.”

The Northampton girls picked up five victories Friday en route to a 71-22 win over Holyoke and a 73-20 win over Putnam.

Scarlet Sands Bliss won the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.

Mairead Blatner won the mile (5:46.07) and Gretchen Saveson won the 600 (1:45.12).

Mary Yount won the 1,000 (3:15.66) while teammates Anna Stiles (3:17.49) and Evelyn Burke (3:18.12) finished second and third, respectively.

Northampton also won the 4×400 relay (4.19.88) in a state-qualifying time.
