AMHERST — A police officer working a road detail Monday morning was clipped by the sideview mirror of a passing vehicle, according to police.

The accident occurred at 9:08 a.m. when a vehicle driven by Joan M. West, 69, of 345 Strong St.,  hit the officer, who is not being identified, near the intersection of Strong Street and Wildwood Lane, said Detective Nicholas Chandler.

West was arrested at the scene on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, Chandler said.

Police Chief Scott Livingstone said in an email that the officer struck is fine, but that it was a close call in avoiding more serious injury.
