For the second year, Westhampton area Cub Scouts in Pack 209 gathered last Sunday at Town Hall for Pinewood Derby racing.

Twenty-one scouts in grades K-4 eyed the finish line after waiting patiently for their gravity-powered wooden car to be placed on the starting block by Rachael Hathaway, of Westhampton, who is an assistant cubmaster.

“They get very excited seeing the cars go down the track,” Hathaway said.

Families lined the track as judges sat by the finish line ready to determine each winner. A group of scouts sat together watching, some munching hot dogs, popcorn and other snacks.

A winner was announced for each den.

First grader Blake Nevins, of Plainfield, earned a first place for his den and was given a medal by Hathaway.

“I’m going to hang it in my room,” he said.

A Best in Show medal was earned by receiving the most votes by other scouts.

Fourth grader Zachary Morrey, of Westhampton, earned that distinction, which he called “pretty cool,” by modeling his car after The General Lee, a name given to a 1969 Dodge Charger from the television series “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

Winners advance to the Metacomet District competition in April.
