Hannah Hackley converted a three-point play with 1 minute, 18 seconds left and Jaimie Renner forced a turnover with 1 second left as the second-ranked Amherst College women’s basketball team beat No. 1 Tufts, 36-35, in Medford Saturday.

Amherst (22-0, 8-0 NESCAC) stayed perfect, while the Jumbos (21-1, 8-1) lost their first.

Ali Doswell had 17 points, while Hackley added seven. Meredith Doswell and Jackie Nagle each had five.

Amherst trailed 18-8 after the first quarter, but shut the Jumbos down in the second to pull within 21-18 at the break.

Both teams struggled in the defensive showdown. Amherst shot 25.6 percent (10-for-39) from the floor, while Tufts shot 29.5 percent (13 of 44). AC committed 23 turnovers to Tufts’ 19.

Emerson 75, Mount Holyoke 62 — Kathryn Violette had 21 points and Katlyn Grover had 19 but the Lyons (2-18, 0-13 NEWMAC) fell at home on Saturday.

Davidson 63, UMass 59 — Alyx Stiff scored a career-high 22 points and Leah McDerment added 12 points and eight assists, but the Minutemen (9-16, 3-9 Atlantic 10) fell Saturday in their annual Play4Kay event that helps raise awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation and cancer research efforts.

Maggie Mulligan had 10 points in defeat.

MIT 83, Smith 70 — Kennedy Guest-Pritchett had 23 points and Erin Hanley added 22 but it wasn’t enough for the Pioneers (14-7, 6-6 NEWMAC) on the road Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Amherst 84, Tufts 71 — Michael Riopel had 19 points and Johnny McCarthy added 18 and 14 rebounds as Amherst (16-4, 6-2 NESCAC) won its 32nd straight at LeFrak Gymnasium Saturday.

Springfield 98, Wheaton 78 — Jake Ross (Northampton) had 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Pride (11-10, 5-5 NEWMAC) won at home Saturday.

Men’s ice hockey

Colby 5, Amherst 2 — Will Vosejpka and David White scored but Amherst (11-5-3, 6-5-3 NESCAC) fell on the road Saturday.

Women’s swimming

Mount Holyoke 167, Smith 119 — Senior Katie Tyler Hadley) won the 50-yard free (25.71) and was on the winning 200 medley relay as the Lyons won at home Saturday. Tyler was also second in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.81) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.22).

Desi Stoyanova won the 1,000 free (11:22.77), the 200 fly (2:19.15) and 200 breast (2:37.30) for the Pioneers.

Men’s track and field

Giegengack Invitational — Brian Gendron won the 1,000 (2:27.25) and Evan Burton won the weight throw (55 feet) to pace UMass in New Haven, Connecticut, Saturday.

Tufts Cupid Challenge — Kevin Connors won the 3,000 (8:34.78), and the 4×400 and 4×800 relays took first for Amherst Saturday.

Women’s track and field

Wesleyan Invitational — Leonie Rauls won the 1,000 in 3:07.26 and anchored the first-place 4×800 relay for Amherst Saturday. Savanna Gornisiewicz won the mile (5:16), Kiana Herold won the high jump (5-3¾) and Abbey Asare-Bediako took the triple (37-3¼).

Zoe Rubinstein won the pole vault (12-0) for Smith.

Alexandra Dibrindisi (Northampton) was fourth (27.14) in the 200 and sixth in the 400 (60.24) for Wesleyan.

Caroline Sullivan (South Hadley) was third (5:18.96) in the mile for Trinity.

URI Coaches Invitational — UMass won five events en route to 125.5 points and a victory in Kingston, Rhode island, Saturday.

Emilie Cowan won the 200 (24.80) and 500 (1:14.34), Colleen Sands won the 3,000 (10:12.03), Kelsey Crawford won the shot put (46-6) and Samantha Thompson won the high jump (5-5).
