Connor Waitkus hit a grand slam, and the pitching held on for the Frontier Regional baseball team in a 7-6 win over Smith Academy on Thursday in Hatfield.

Waitkus’ homer came in the third inning. The Red Hawks amassed a 6-0 lead in the inning.

Going into the bottom of the seventh the lead was 7-3, but the Falcons had a chance to win.

With the winning run at second and the tying run at third, Frontier’s Seth Gewanter got Brett Gratz to fly out. Gewanter picked up the save for Frontier.

Ben Arnold pitched five innings to pick up the win for the Frontier, giving up three runs and two hits while striking out five.

For Smith Academy (1-2), Matt Bouley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Pathfinder 6, Smith Voke 0 — The Vikings drew six walks in the road loss but could not get a hit against Jake Allard, who recorded the no-hitter.

Matt Hewes had seven strikeouts for the Vikings (1-1).

Easthampton 4, Turners Falls 1 — Dawson Wolcott struck out seven in a complete game win and went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate in the Eagles’ first win of the season.

Mike Ryan drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice. Nick Soucy followed up with a two-run single for Easthampton (1-2)

Athol 3, Hopkins Academy 1 — The Golden Hawks had nine hits but had trouble plating base runners in a road loss.

Noah Scanlon-Dean went 3-for-4 with the lone RBI for Hopkins (1-1)

Trevor Fil went the distance and only gave up one earned run with eight strikeouts.

South Hadley 8, Mahar 1 — Teddy Doyle’s two hits and two RBIs led the Tigers (2-0) to a road win.

Evan Levrault got the win on the mound with 11 strikeouts, and added two hits and an RBI.

Mohawk 11, Belchertown 4 — The Orioles couldn’t keep up with the Warriors in the road loss.

Victor Camerota and Chase Kupinsky (RBI) both had two hits for Belchertown (2-1).

Palmer 9, Hampshire Regional 3 — Camden Kelly, Garrett Kowal and Ben Fitzpatrick each had RBIs in a road loss for the Raiders (0-2)

Holyoke 2, Amherst 1 (8) — Trevor Edwards pitched a stellar game for Amherst in an extra innings road loss.

Edwards gave up one unearned run over seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out 10.

After a leadoff single in the first Edwards retired the next 11 batters in a row.

Holyoke drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth before stealing second and driving in the winning run with a single.

Jake Balderston scored the lone Hurricanes run and went 1-for-2 with three walks and three steals.

On Tuesday Amherst scored twice in the seventh but its comeback attempt fell short in a 4-2 road loss at Central.

Balderston went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Nathan Masteralexis pitched 5⅓ 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs off seven hits and one walk while striking out five.

Edwards hit a double and scored a run.

Softball

Northampton 9, Athol 8 — Abby Pelis hit a grand slam on a 3-for-4 day with five RBIs in a home win.

Her younger sister Emilia Pelis went 2-for-5 with a home run, her second of the season.

Anna Connly picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and Calista Lebron was 2-for-2.

Anna Kerwood picked up the win in relief for Northampton (3-1), striking out two in three innings of work.

Sabis 9, Gateway 2 — Gateway could not recover from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning in a road loss.

Audrey Gamble pitched all six innings for the Gators, striking out six with six walks and a hit by pitch.

Gateway’s Ava Auclair went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

Erica Wolfe and Dayna Britland also both went 2-for-4, while Britland added one RBI for the Gators.

Belchertown 15, South Hadley 3 — Chloe Roux did it at the plate and in the circle for the Orioles (1-2) in a road win over the Tigers.

Roux gave up three runs, six hits and struck out two in five innings to collect the win,

At the plate, Roux had three hits and two RBIs; while Alexis Lajeunesse added two hits and three RBIs.

For the Tigers (0-2), Abby Edge had a hit and two RBIs.

Hampshire 12, Longmeadow 2 — Katy O’Connor powered the Raiders to a road win with a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included two home runs and five RBIs.

Emily Halket earned the win on the mound allowing five hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out seven.

Madison Philbrook went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Red Raiders.

Smith Voke 22, Sci-Tech 6 — Samantha Van Haugg had nine strikeouts and gave up no hits on three innings pitched.

Alli Kowalzyk hit a grand slam in the first inning and ended the contest 2-for-3 at the plate. In addition to her performance on the mound, Van Haugg went 4-for-4 at the plate and had 3 RBIs. Amanda York went 1-for-1 and brought in three runs off a double.

Mohawk 19, Hopkins 5 (5) — Gabby Palmisano and Maegan Quinlan both tripled for the Golden Hawks in a road loss.

Palmisano plated one run with her triple.

Quinlan’s triple drove in two runs.

Pope Francis 11, Smith Academy 6 — A five run rally in the seventh was not enough for Smith Academy in a road loss.

Emma Hobert went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs for the Falcons.

Karlie Guimond went 3-for-3 with one run scored.

Erin Gilrein tripled and drove in one run.
