AMHERST — An Amherst woman is out $3,000 after she provided gift cards and personal information to a caller pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service, according to Amherst Police.
At 7:58 p.m Thursday, police were notified by the woman’s daughter that her mother bought Target gift cards and provided the serial numbers to a person claiming to be from the IRS and threatening her with arrest, Detective Jamie Readon said.
Police determined the phone number from which the call came is one known for scams. Reardon reminded that the IRS will not contact people by phone.
