One run was all Hopkins Academy junior pitcher Jon Morrison needed against the Smith Academy baseball team.
He threw a no-hitter, striking out 17 with just two walks in a 1-0 win for the Golden Hawks, Monday in Hadley.
“He was really locked in,” Hopkins coach Dan Vreeland said. “It was one of those days where whatever he wanted to do, he did.”
Hopkins (3-2) needed every bit of his dominance in a tight game.
The Golden Hawks had seven hits and left the bases loaded twice, but scratched a run across in the third inning.
Noah Scanlon-Dean walked to open the inning, then Nate Kelly (2-for-2) bunted him to second. Morrison singled to put runners on first and third. Trevor Fil grounded to second, but Smith Academy (2-4) couldn’t turn the double play to end the inning, as Scanlon-Dean came home.
Northampton 1, Chicopee 0 (9) — Zach Brittain struck out six, throwing an extra-innings shutout with just 100 pitches.
“He was awesome,” Northampton coach Mark Baldwin.
Brittain also went 2-for-3 and led the ninth inning off with a triple. He didn’t score, but Joe Pion hit a one-out double. Andy Grygorcewicz (2-for-4) then drove Pion in for the game’s only run.
Pion also threw out a runner from behind the plate and caught multiple challenging pop-ups for Northampton (6-1, 3-0 Valley Wheel).
Chicopee had a leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Grygorcewicz made a diving stop on the infield and threw the runner out at home from his knees.
With runners on second and third, Brittain struck out Chicopee’s last two batters.
RJ Safron went 2-for-4 with a double.
Granby 23, Putnam 0 (5) — Michael White threw a perfect game, striking out 10 of the 15 batters he faced in a run-rule shortened victory.
He worked a 12-6 curveball low in the zone that Putnam’s hitters struggled with.
“He kept the ball down at the knees the whole time. Tough one for the hitters there,” Granby coach Jim Woods said. “He was ahead, then we were ahead.”
The Rams (4-2, 1-2 Bi-County) scored 17 runs in the first two innings, including 12 in the second.
Joe Desormier went 3-for-4 and needed just a home run for the cycle. Ben Rokowski also had three hits and two RBIs.
Dom Rosazza had two RBIs and three hits.
Hampshire Regional 17, Southwick 2 — Noah Batchelder was 3-for-5 (two doubles, six RBIs) with a three-run homer in the fifth inning as the Raiders (2-4) broke away from a 1-0 lead after three innings.
Steve Moussette was 4-for-4 (four RBIs), while Cam Kelly was 3-for-4 with a double.
Ben Fitzpatrick struck out nine and allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks over five innings for the win. Gage Fortin fanned four in two innings of relief.
Greenfield 9, Easthampton 0 — Zack Kulger had the Eagles’ only hit.
Dawson Wolcott took the loss for Easthampton (1-4).
Pioneer Regional 5, Belchertown 1 — Jackson Leduc scored the lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for the Orioles (3-3). Jacob Torna tried to score later in the inning, but was gunned down at the plate.
Ryan French fanned five, walked one and allowed three hits over seven innings in the loss.
Minnechaug 8, Amherst 3 — Will Budington had two hits and an RBI, but one big inning hurt the Hurricanes.
Trevor Edwards knocked in two hits, and Julian Burgoff added a hit and scored a run.
Seth Bella-Hunter struck out five in three innings of work for Amherst (1-5, 1-1 Valley), allowing six hits and no walks.
Frontier Regional 11, Mahar 0 — Ben Arnold (2-for-3) hit a triple and had four RBIs for the Red Hawks.
Liam Fall added a single for Frontier (4-2).
Dylan Apanell picked up the win, striking out five in six innings of work, allowing just two hits.
