GRANBY — For the second time this year, voters at a special Town Meeting will decide whether to approve about $178,000 in funds to close a school lunch deficit.
Voters will cover a combined 16 articles at Monday’s special and annual Town Meetings. The annual Town Meeting begins at 7 p.m., while the special Town Meeting is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., both at Granby Junior-Senior High School on East State Street.
Article 2 on the special Town Meeting warrant will address the school lunch deficit, which first came before residents during a special meeting in January and was voted down.
That deficit has been building since 2011 but has grown more quickly in the past few years because more students are opting to bring lunch from home, school officials said in advance of the January meeting.
The article failed in January when Finance Committee Chairman John Libera Jr. told voters the committee recommended it be voted it down.
Town Administrator Chris Martin said Wednesday that at the time it was presented, the School Committee did not give the Finance Committee a plan on how they would avoid deficits in the future. It was not immediately known if such as plan has since been produced.
Other items on the special Town Meeting warrant including $54,702 to fund bonding costs for the East Meadow School project, and three $228,415 transfers from free cash to various stabilization funds. Martin said the bond funding would also come out of free cash if passed.
As part of the annual Town Meeting, voters will address the first 11 articles which allow the town’s selectmen to advertise for sale various properties, set compensation rates for various town boards as well as inspection rates for the Conservation Commission, and allow the town to enter into intergovernmental agreements.
The Town Meeting warrant’s remaining 18 articles relating to the town budget will be voted on June 12.
A joint meeting between the Select Board, the Finance Committee and the School Committee is scheduled for May 16.
The board and committees are expected to discuss the fiscal 2018 school budget which will come before voters in June when Town Meeting resumes.
Sample warrants can be found on the town website. The annual town election will be held May 15.
