Frontier Regional girls track & field coach Bob Smith just wanted Lisa Portier, who was dealing with a nagging injury at the time, to do something.

So Smith had her start throwing the shot put two weeks ago. Throwing coach Jim Recore worked with the senior, who proved to be a quick study.

On Thursday, Portier won the event with a toss with 28 feet, 8 inches. She set a person record as Frontier beat Palmer 96½-48½ in South Deerfield.

Portier is not far from the Central-West Division 2 Championship qualifying mark of 30-2½.

Portier also won the triple jump (31-½) and the 100-meter dash (13.8 seconds).

Jenna Martin won the long jump (15-¾) and 400 hurdles (75.5). Greyson Young won the mile (6:31) and 800 (2:53).

Frontier (4-0, 4-0 Suburban) is keeping pace with Southwick (5-0, 4-0). The two teams meet in Southwick on May 15 in both teams’ league finale.
