Ida Weiss, a senior at Hampshire Regional High School in Westhampton, and eight other teens from western Massachusetts, marched in the People’s Climate March in Washington D.C., last weekend. Along with her, there were six teens from the Northampton High School Environmental Club and two eighth-graders from the Hilltown Charter School in Easthampton.
Weiss says the group boarded a bus at 12 a.m. Saturday, marched all day, then arrived home at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. “We marched loud and proud with Climate Action Now, from Western Mass,” she wrote in an email to the Gazette. “I think I can speak for the group that we all left feeling inspired, validated, connected, and ready to be the voices of climate action in our communities.”
Willa Sippel from Northampton High School added, “It was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Being surrounded by 200,000 other environmental activists who share the same dedication really drives you to continue the fight for climate justice.”
The group shown in the photo are Jonathan Lischetti, left, Jonah Herman-Slaghekke, Willa Sippel, Ida Weiss, Mairead Blatner, Gretchen Saveson, Galen Winsor, Rosie Ingmann, Adia Bennett.
