For the past five Mondays, about 40 children in grades 2-8 have mounted their bicycles for the Northampton Cycling Club Junior Cyclocross Training Program at Look Memorial Park. Cyclocross is usually raced on a one-to-two-mile loop of wooded trails, grass, pavement, sand andย mud, with hills, barriers and other obstacles.

The young riders learned to ride safely in a group, bunny hop obstacles, dismount and remount and ride through a wide variety of terrain.

National Cyclocross champions Ellen Noble and Stephen Hyde, former champion Jeremy Powers โ€” all of Easthampton โ€” and members of the JAM Fund Cyclocross Elite Program volunteered at the gatherings, passing along tips and encouraging the kids.

NCC youth programs director and organizer Tom Hoogendyk, of Florence, has organized the training program for the past three years; the event is co-sponsored by Northampton Parks and Recreation.

โ€œCycling is a metaphor for life,โ€ Hoogendyk said. โ€œKids learn about themselves and gain confidence in something new.โ€

Cory Ellen Gatrall, of Florence, has brought her twins, Renzo and Araminta, 9, for three years. She agreed that the program builds confidence. While Renzo had no problem competing, Araminta was hesitant to take part until this year because she was afraid of ending up in last place.

โ€œI’m so proud of her,โ€ Gatrall said. โ€œI love watching her not be the best and being okay with it.โ€

Peter Graham, of Leeds, moved to the area recently and signed up his son, Jackson, 7.

โ€œIt’s the best thing he’s got going. It’s a great scene out here, and you feel immersed in the group,โ€ Graham said.
