I am reluctant to take issue with two such eminent citizens as Silas Kopf and Bill Newman (“Suggests alternate style to grammarian Silas Kopf,” July 25), but in the matter of the name of our local emporium, neither is absolutely correct.
As the standard authority in such questions — the Modern Language Association’s style manual — explains, nouns can and do often serve as adjectives. A simple example would be “dog collar.”
Thus, “Thornes Market” is a perfectly acceptable name.
