AMHERST — The Amherst College men’s soccer team takes on its second doubleheader weekend of the season with two home games — Tufts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Rutgers-Newark at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re looking forward to a good weekend,” head coach Justin Serpone said. “We knew when we put the schedule together that this weekend was going to challenge us.”

Amherst (2-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) is coming off its best offensive performance with a 5-0 win against Pine Manor. Five players scored, three of whom tallied their first collegiate goal.

“Chances are going to be a little harder to come by this Saturday and Sunday,” Serpone said. “If we can finish the chances we get, we’ll be fine.”

Through four games the Mammoths have netted seven goals from seven players. Defensively they’ve allowed two goals. Amherst, which averages 15.5 shots per game, is focusing on maintaining its offensive pressure.

Junior Andres Pascual-Leone said the team has been preparing the way it always does and has been focusing on bettering itself for the rest of the season.

Tufts (6-0-1, 3-0-1) has seven shutouts this season. The only blemish on the Jumbos’ record stems from a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Connecticut College. Tufts also went to overtime to beat Babson and Colby.

Tufts, which averages 1.71 goals per game, visits Hamilton on Sunday.

“Our program always talks about Sundays,” Serpone said. “If you want to be a good team in Division III soccer, you have to win on Sunday.”

Rutgers-Newark (11-0-0) has nine shutouts this season. The Raiders have allowed only two goals.

The New Jersey-based team has netted 35 goals this season. Forward Fabio De Sousa has scored a team-high nine goals.

Pascual-Leone said the team loves doubleheader weekends and spending all that time together.

“If you’re going to play in November you have to be able to play doubleheaders,” Pascual-Leone said. “We bring energy to both days no matter what.”

The Mammoths played two games last weekend, tying Williams, 1-1, on Saturday and beating Pine Manor Sunday. Amherst has two more doubleheader weekends in October.

“It’s got to be a focus because if you’re not great on Sunday then you can’t win a championship,” Serpone said. “And the goal for this program is to win championships.”
