NORTHAMPTON — The trial for a Springfield man facing a slew of armed robbery charges begins Wednesday in Hampshire Superior Court.

Edgardo R. Rivera pleaded not guilty in July 2016 to five counts of masked armed robbery and two counts of conspiracy. Rivera and two women — Jahira Flores, of Springfield, and Frances Deleon, of Agawam — allegedly robbed the Monson Savings Bank in Ware during the spring of 2016. Rivera and Deleon are accused of robbing a bank in South Hadley earlier that same spring.

The trial is expected to last about a week before being handed to a jury. In September, Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Jennifer Suhl said in court that the prosecution has 20 witnesses in the case.

Rivera is being represented by attorney Alfred Chamberland.
