SPRINGFIELD — After five straight weeks of losing, the Northampton football team took out some frustration against Putnam on Friday night.

The Blue Devils beat the winless Beavers 34-6 at Central High School.

“The whole season has been about adversity,” Northampton coach Eddie Jewel said. “We were there for each other tonight.”

Quarterback Tom Jacques threw for four touchdowns in the win. With time to set his feet and make throws, Jacques showed accuracy and allowed his receivers to make plays after the catch.

Andy Grygorcewicz, playing at quarterback and wide receiver, accounted for two touchdowns.

“After playing that tough schedule we came out and played as a team,” Grygorcewicz said.

With more of a threat of a running game, the Blue Devils introduced some misdirection to the offense.

The Blue Devils had 99 yards rushing, with Grygorcewicz accumulating for 62 yards.

“When we aren’t healthy we have to limit our tool box,” Jewel said. “The run game opens the pass game.”

Grygorcewicz also caught three passes for 69 yards.

On Northampton’s second offensive play, Jacques found Jake Brittain for a 28-yard touchdown.

Brittain made a nice adjustment to get past his defender and back to the ball.

In the second quarter, Jacques lofted a throw to the right side of the end zone that Grygorcewicz pulled down among two defenders.

Grygorcewicz, playing quarterback, took a keeper 7-yards around the edge and dove for the pylon to give Northampton a 22-0 lead at halftime.

Devontay Edmonds and Anthony DeJesus both had interceptions for Northampton’s defense.

Edmonds added a sack along with Caleb Graves.

The Beavers had trouble getting the running game going with Nicolas Sandoval patrolling his way through the trenches.

After a turnover on downs by the Beavers on their own 44-yard line, Northampton scored again.

Jacques found Braedan Tudryn, who darted down the sideline for a 44-yard touchdown.

On the play, Grygorcewicz flattened a Putnam defender to create the lane for Tudryn.

In the fourth quarter, DeJesus got some cheers from the home Putnam crowd on a receiving touchdown.

After catching a pass from Jacques, DeJesus broke out a spin move that left a Putnam defender on the ground and gave him a open sideline for the Blue Devils’ final touchdown.

The Beavers (0-8, 0-5) did not have much offense except for quarterback Cecil Villa.

Villa had a 9-yard touchdown in the third quarter and had 53 yards on eight carries.

Tight end Davyn Patterson caught six passes for 69 yards for the Beavers.
