The Amherst College men’s cross country team placed three runners in the top five to win the NESCAC championship Saturday.

The Mammoths scored 35 points, while Middlebury was second with 66.

Mohamed Hussein won the individual title for Amherst, completing the eight-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 7.3 seconds. Clark Ricciardelli was fourth (25:20.5), and Cosmo Brossy took fifth (25:32.0).

Kristian Sogaard (25:41.9) and Tucker Meijer (25:45.9) rounded out Amherst’s scoring in 11th and 15th, respectively.

It was the Mammoth’s first conference title in program history.

Atlantic 10 Championships — UMass finished sixth with 173 points led by Erik Engstrom in 19th (25:57.9) on Saturday.

Dayton won the team title with 66 points.

Football

Amherst 31, Tufts 26 — James O’Regan tallied 132 yards receiving and a touchdown, and the Mammoths held of a rally on the road Saturday.

Amherst (6-1) led 31-13 with 5 minutes, 48 seconds left in the third quarter before the Jumbos scored the game’s last 13.

Quarterback Ollie Eberth ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while Jack Hickey led Amherst with 75 yards and scored. Eberth also threw for 236 yards.

Andrew Sommers had 10 tackles and two sacks.

Ice hockey

Merrimack 5, UMass 3 — Mario Ferraro scored twice, but the Minutemen lost on the road Saturday.

Oliver Chau also found the net with two assists, while Cale Makar, Phillip Lagunov, Josh Couturier and Niko Rufo added on assist for UMass (4-4, 1-1 Hockey East).

Matt Murray stopped 26 shots.

Field hockey

Mount Holyoke 3, WPI 0 — Sophie Perekslis, Kaitlin Braz and Mirjam Keochakian found the net Saturday. Braz also had an assist.

Colby Newsham and Kathryn Rawson also dished out assists, and Morgan Turner made four saves for the Lyons (12-5, 5-3 NEWMAC).

They’ll face Springfield College on Tuesday in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.

Smith 3, Clark 1 — Alex Larosee found the net twice Saturday. Julia Hamilton scored and added an assist, and Cameo Tietje made five saves for the Pioneers (9-9, 4-3 NEWMAC).

Smith will host Wellesley on Tuesday in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament.

Williams 4, Amherst 2 — Emery Sorvino scored both goals for the Mammoths on Saturday. Mary Grace Cronin added an assist, and Katie Savage and Emily LaFlamme made a save each for Amherst (10-6).

Men’s soccer

UMass 4, George Mason 1 — Belchertown’s Alex Desantis helped the Minutemen extend their unbeaten run to 11 games with a goal and an assist Saturday.

Amherst native and Williston Northampton product Davis Smith also found the net with an assist.

Matthew Mooney and Mike Rita scored, while Samuel Asamoah and Jack Fulton dished out assists.

Bardina Asefina made five saves for UMass (12-2-3, 9-0-1 A-10)

Women’s soccer

Babson 2, Mount Holyoke 1 — Minerva Veeser-Bobea scored from Sara Sanaú Ruiz on Saturday. Amanda Manaster made 12 saves for the Lyons (2-14-1, 0-9-1 NEWMAC).

Clark 1, Smith 0 — Shelby Hall made four saves, but an own goal sank the Pioneers (6-10-1, 2-8 NEWMAC) on Saturday.

Amherst 1, Connecticut College 0 — Rubii Tamen scored a winner in the 42nd minute Saturday. Hayley Roy assisted to send the Mammoths (9-6-1) to the NESCAC semifinals Saturday at Williams.

Chelsea Cutler made five saves.

Women’s cross country

NESCAC Championships — Amherst senior Nicky Roberts captured a conference title, crossing the line in 21:19.9.

The Mammoths were fifth as a team.

Atlantic 10 Championships — UMass’ Heather MacLean won the individual race in 17:22.2 on Saturday.

The Minutewomen took fourth as a team with 143 points, while Dayton scored 42 to capture the title.

NEWMAC Championship — Smith College finished fifth as a team Sunday with 145 points led by Karen Garcia in 21st (19:32 ).

Corrin Moss was 29th (19:57) for Mount Holyoke, which was 10th as a team.

Women’s volleyball

Babson 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Sasha Simine tallied eight kills in a 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 loss Saturday.

Brayden Walden had 18 assists, and Cameron Graham made 11 digs for the Lyons (10-12, 1-9 NEWMAC).
