AMHERST — No horses or people were injured early Sunday morning when an allegedly drunken driver crashed his vehicle through an electric fence at the Muddy Brook Farm, 646 West St.

Amherst Police responded to the location at 12:15 a.m. after getting a report that a 1998 Chevy Tahoe drove through the fence, said Detective Yvonne Feliciano.

At least one horse escaped from its enclosure, but was safely returned to its field by the farm’s owner, Feliciano said. Current to the electric fence was also turned off.

Juan E. Diaz, 32, of 32 High St., Apartment 2, Easthampton, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, wanton destruction of property over $250 and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license, second or subsequent offense, Feliciano said.

Diaz’s vehicle, which briefly caught on fire after making contact with the fence, was towed from the scene, Feliciano said.
