NORTHAMPTON — A local man arrested outside of City Hall last summer was indicted on unrelated assault charges Tuesday.
A Hampshire Superior Court grand jury handed up three indictments for Eric E. Matlock, 33. He is charged with two counts of assault and battery and a count of malicious destruction of property over $250.
The indictments stem from a Dec. 19 incident in which Matlock allegedly assaulted two people and caused more than $250 worth of a damage to something owned by the pair.
Police maced and physically removed Matlock from the steps of City Hall on Aug. 7, 2017, after receiving multiple reports that he was blocking the front entrance to the building.
Matlock was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer. He pleaded not guilty in Northampton District Court to the charges last month. His arrest raised questions among some about the police department’s use of force.
An arraignment date on the superior court charges has not yet been scheduled. The charges were not previously brought in district court.
