AMHERST — A first-year student at the University of Massachusetts has died, according to an e-mail sent out to the campus community on Wednesday.

“It is with great sadness that I write today to inform you of the death of Scott Erlandson,” Dean of Students Cara Appel-Silbaugh wrote in the e-mail.

According to the e-mail, Erlandson was enrolled in the College of Information and Computer Sciences at UMass and was from Georgetown, Massachusetts.

“At this time, in keeping with the wishes of Scott’s family, I have no other information to share.” Appel-Silbaugh wrote. “On behalf of UMass, we extend our sincere condolences to Scott’s family and friends who are mourning his untimely death.”

The message also included contact information for campus resources and counseling services, as well as a note to check the student loss and remembrance website for additional resources and updates regarding any services to be held for Erlandson.

UMass spokesman Daniel Fitzgibbons said that per the wishes of the family, the Wednesday e-mail will likely be the extent of information released by the university for the foreseeable future. The email did not include any information on cause or location of death.
