Regarding the snacks offered at JFK Middle School, I have grandchildren who attend the school (“JFK parents take issue with new snack options,” May 17).
If kids at the age of 13 can decide if their parents should or shouldn’t be in the doctor’s office, they should be able to make their own decisions to buy snack foods at school. It’s up to the parents/guardians to teach their kids healthy eating habits.
Parents/guardians can put restrictions on their kids accounts to ensure they don’t go overboard, even to a point where they can restrict any snack food purchases at all if they feel they need to. Letting kids make their own choices like this is a good way to start teaching the process. Where better than a school?
You can’t go to a restaurant and tell them they can’t sell desserts/snacks because it’ll make them obese, and that they need to give kids healthier choices. Parents/guardians can always tell their kids, “No you can’t have it.”
Besides we have more pressing issues to deal with at the school level.
