Germander Speedwell
East Hawley Road, Hawley
Photograph and text by Georgette deFriesse, Belchertown
I was grabbing a few minutes to walk around and look at wildflowers after doing heavy work outside on my property in Hawley June 7 when I came across this beauty. It was a lone plant which I hadn’t seen before in my back yard. This is an area where I had planted wildflower seed from the now-defunct Project Native in Housatonic. I had hoped this was from their seed, but it turns out to be germander speedwell, a non-native plant which is sold as ground cover. A stray seed must have found its way to my yard. Sadly, I’ll have to stop it from spreading, in spite of its cheerful blossoms. I captured this image using a handheld DSLR with a medium telephoto lens.
