The June 5 column by Jay Fleitman (“Uncertain path away from polarization”) discussing polarization and his inability to offer a way to mitigate it doesn’t surprise me.
Polarization has developed to the level it has because one group of reasonable, knowledgeable citizens are having difficulty trying to understand the logic behind arguments used by a group supporting the current administration’s policies.
These supporters believe that coal will make a comeback as a fuel of choice. They believe the recent tax bill is in the best interests of the general public. They believe that levying tariffs on goods from our allies will benefit them.
The problem with these and other beliefs is they can’t logically and reasonably explain their support. They simply argue and take a supporting position not because they understand the issues and consider reality, but rather because they are told it’s good policy. It’s like a parent telling the child, take the medicine because it’s good for you.
It’s very difficult to mitigate polarization over issues when trying to discuss them without educated participants who are willing to consider reality and understanding the issues. I believe this is what’s lacking with most supporters of the current administration.
But then we add insult by having children of folks seeking asylum taken away under the pretense that their parents are being arrested. That is a complete farce. It’s hard to imagine Americans being polarized over this, but if so, this country has come a long way down.
