Northampton native Erik Ostberg was named a New York-Penn League All-Star Tuesday, the league announced.
Ostberg will play for the North team at the all-star game next week.
The University of Hartford and Williston Northampton product plays for the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Tampa Bay Rays’ Class A short-season affiliate in Wappingers Falls, New York. Tampa Bay drafted Ostberg in the 13th round of the June draft last year.
This is Ostberg’s first full season as a professional after recovering from a knee injury last year.
“Can’t lie, I’m fired up to make this all-star game,” Ostberg said in a text message Tuesday. “First pro all-star game.”
Ostberg, who played catcher in college but is a designated hitter for Hudson Valley, is hitting .317 for the season with 19 RBIs. He’s hit one home run and nine doubles. Ostberg’s average would be good for fourth in the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify.
The all-star game will be Aug. 14, in State College, Pennsylvania, hosted by the State College Spikes at Lubrano Park.
The Renegades are a league-best 30-19, and hold first place in the McNamara Division.
