NORTHAMPTON — City firefighters quickly contained a small fire in an upstairs room of a vacant house on South Street late Tuesday night.
Around 10:30 p.m., the Northampton Fire Department responded to reports from neighbors about a steady flow of smoke and loud noises from smoke detectors coming from 284 South St.
“Crews arrived on scene, and they had fire showing from the second floor window and some smoke pushing out the eaves,” said Northampton Fire Chief Duane Nichols. “They basically advanced the line inside and quickly found a fire on the second floor, and they extinguished it out.”
The home has been under renovation, and no one was injured.
According to Nichols, the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
“It seems confined to that one room on the second floor,” Nichols said. “We’re still piecing it together.”
J.J. Hoffstein, 26, said that he was next door with friends when they noticed smoke.
“We were outside, and we started to see smoke from the house, so we called it in,” Hoffstein explained.
City resident Ben Bosco, 16, said that he saw the commotion at the house as he was coming home from work on his bike.
“I heard it was a house fire, and I’m an amateur photographer, so I decided to go and take a look,” Bosco said.
