Liam Joy didn’t take long to impact the South Hadley boys soccer team in his return from a head injury.

He scored twice in a 2-1 win over Sabis on Wednesday.

Joy gave the Tigers (3-1) the lead initially on a free kick that avoided Sabis’ wall to the left and found the bottom corner with 1:46 left in the first half.

Joy scored the winner with 15:10 left after corralling a long ball from Chris Casolari then turning and firing.

Clayton Koppi stopped 10 shots for South Hadley.

Chicopee 1, Belchertown 0 — The Pacers scored a winner with 10 minutes left.

Chris Tilton made four saves for the Orioles (5-1).

Gateway Regional 3, Renaissance 2 — Ben Hyjek netted the winner in the second half on an assist from Evan Cortis.

Joel Sakaske scored off an assist from Evan Lee to give the Gators a halftime lead. Lee also found the net with a second-half goal.

John Foley made five first-half saves, while Preston Coffey finished with five in the second half for Gateway (2-2, 2-2 Schmid).

Athol 6, Hopkins Academy 2 — Mark Peirce and Addison Phifer scored in a road loss.

The Golden Hawks (2-3, 2-2 Schmid) gave up four goals in the second half.

Gregory Kucinski and Andrew Ciaglo had assists.

Jack Feltovic made nine saves.

Girls soccer

Southwick 1, Granby 0 — Julia Gauvin made 10 saves, as the Rams (3-3, 2-2 Central) lost their third straight game. All three came against teams that reached last year’s Division 3 sectional semifinals.

Mahar 5, Hopkins Academy 1 — Jordan Labrecque had the goal for the Golden Hawks with an assist from Mary Kate Farnham.

Megan Jolly stopped 12 shots for Hopkins (0-5, 0-4 Pioneer North).

Smith Academy 5, Mohawk 0 — Maggie Hession scored twice, as the Falcons overwhelmed on the road.

Story Goldman, Emma Moynihan and Keene Jeffress also had goals. Charlotte Vannah and Erin Gilrein added assists.

Madelyn Bell made four saves for Smith Academy (3-1, 3-1 Pioneer South).

Field hockey

Amherst 2, Pioneer Valley 1 — Malina Kern regained the Hurricanes’ lead in the second half, scoring off an assist from Annabelle Olendzki.

Rachita Randhir got the Hurricanes on the board first. Zora Dallmann and Becca Lee assisted.

Emily Ireland finished with 10 saves for Amherst (3-1, 3-1 Tri-County)

South Hadley 4, Westfield 0 —Savannah Sudyka’s two-goals powered the Tigers to a road shutout.

Kayla Carleton (assist) and Olivia Wilson both found the net for South Hadley (4-1-1, 3-1-1 Valley League).

Maddie Fontaine made two stops in the first half, while Brooke Blair made no saves in the second half.

Belchertown 2, Athol 1 — Kaleigh Cooper and Hailley Boutin both scored in the first half, and the Orioles survived on the road.

Elyssa Wrona and Emma Rothstein added assists for Belchertown (4-0, 4-0 Tri-County).

Girls volleyball

Belchertown 3, Athol 0— Madison Mallalieu finished with seven aces, while Joelle Ouimette had three in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 win.

Marissa Courchesne led the team with seven kills, while Jenna Donovan ended with three for the Tigers (3-4-0, 1-1 Southern).

Easthampton 3, Mahar 1 — Autumn Pinard had 25 assists to go along with seven digs in a 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12 road win, while Devney Horne finished with 15 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Kaylee Powers finished with nine kills and eight digs.

Skylar Raskevitz had five aces and 21 digs for Easthampton (2-3, 0-2 Southern).

Southwick 3, Smith Vocational 0 — Marissa Rodrigues made three digs, two assists and a kill, but the Vikings lost 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.

Amber Pensivy added a dig and an ace.

South Hadley 3, Mohawk 0 — Aislinn Ford led the way with seven aces and six kills, while Kayla Simon added 12 kills and three aces. Taylor Jackson finished with five assists for the Tigers (4-1, 1-1 Southern).
