JB Mills couldn’t throw any pregame warmup passes after the Amherst Regional football team arrived late for its game at Woodstock Academy, Friday.
He shook off a poor first quarter and went 15-for-28 with 207 yards and two touchdowns, as the Hurricanes won, 22-8, in Woodstock, Connecticut.
The Hurricanes (3-2) needed to rely on Mills. Running back Dan Block went down with an injury after gaining 30 yards and intercepting a pass. Amherst was already was without normal starter Josh Vecchio, who is injured.
“We couldn’t run the ball,” Amherst coach Chris Ehorn Jr. said. “We just put it in his hands and let him throw.”
Amherst led 14-2 at halftime, but the Centaurs scored on a 50-yard touchdown by quarterback Derek Thompson to pull within a score.
The Hurricanes executed a goal-line stand on Woodstock’s next drive, and Mills led Amherst to a game-sealing touchdown.
He threw touchdowns to Isaiah Moyston and CJ Woodfine-Holmes. Woodfine-Holmes finished with 115 yards receiving, a touchdown, and ran for a 7-yard score from the wildcat formation.
Amherst plays its next two games at home aiming for a playoff berth. The Hurricanes host Monument Mountain at 7 p.m. Friday.
