The UMass hockey team completed its season opening sweep of RPI as Mitchell Chaffee netted two goals in a 3-1 victory, Saturday night at Houston Field House in Troy, New York.
“Just like (Friday) night I felt, as the game went on, our skating and our legs seemed to be in better conditioning than RPI’s and the third period was really solid,” UMass coach Greg Carvel said in a statement. “I thought we just really neutralized them and then that was a huge goal at the end before they could get the goalie out. I’m very happy, that’s a very good road win. There are no easy road wins.”
Chaffee scored his first goal 5 minutes, 7 seconds into the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Bobby Trivigno had the assist.
Chaffee scored with 1:36 left in the game to seal the win. Trivigno and Jake Gaudet had assists.
Colin Felix scored from Anthony Del Gaizo 3:01 into the first to give UMass a 1-0. The points were the first for the freshmen.
Freshman goalie Fille Lindberg made 20 saves for his first win.
Amherst College 4, Staten Island 0 — Luke Nguyen, German Giammattei, Dylan Steele and Will Cohen each scored as the Mammoths (8-3-1) rolled Sunday.
Amherst 3, Colby 0 — Fikayo Ajayi had a goal and one assist for the Mammoths, Saturday
UMass 1, Fordham 0 — DeAndrae Brown scored and Marvyn Dorchin made six saves for the visiting Minutemen (6-6-3), Saturday.
Amherst 2, Springfield 0 — Rubii Tamen scored twice as the Mammoths (11-1-1) won on the road, Sunday.
Amherst 3, Colby 0 — Navva Sedigh, Cassie Chin and Kim Zhou scored for the Mammoths, Saturday.
Smith 2, Babson 1 — Jessica Matsuoka and Reilly Sullivan (assist) scored for the Pioneers (7-8-0), Saturday.
WPI 1, Mount Holyoke 0 — Amanda Manaster made 15 saves for the Lyons (3-9-1), Saturday.
Simmons 4, Norwich 0 — Sienna Caron (Easthampton) had an assist for the Sharks (8-5-1), Saturday.
Boston College 6, UMass 1 — Lucy Cooper scored and Johanna von dem Borne made nine saves, but the Minutewomen (7-9) fell on the road to the 12th-ranked Eagles (9-5), Sunday.
Amherst 3, Bates 1 — Laura Schwartzman, Franny Daniels and Natalie Hobbs each scored as the Mammoths (8-4) won Sunday.
Amherst 2, Colby 1 (OT) — Daniels netted the winner for the Mammoths, while Schwartzman had a goal and one assist, Saturday.
Babson 3, Smith 0 — Channy Cornell made 11 saves for the Pioneers (8-5), Saturday.
Mount Holyoke 2, Wheaton 1 — Kristina Ramsden (Florence) scored twice for the Lyons (8-6), Saturday.
Connecticut College Invitational — Amherst (72 points) edged Williams (76) for the win, Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Connecticut.
Cosmo Brossy was second overall (24:54.6) on the 8-kilometer course for the Mammoths.

Seven Sisters — Smith finished third and Mount Holyoke was fourth, Sunday at Rose Tree Park in Media, Pennsylvania.
Karena Garcia was sixth and Frances Duncan (Amherst Regional) was 11th for Smith.
Simone Jacob was 12th for Mount Holyoke.
Amherst 3, Williams 1 — Emily Kolsky had 14 kills, Charlotte Duran had 41 assists, and Hayes Honea and Skyleur Savage each had 13 digs for the Mammoths (14-3), Saturday.
Baruch 3, Mount Holyoke 1; Mount Holyoke 3, Southern Maine 1 — Jamesa Allen had a combined 23 kills as the Lyons (7-11) split at home, Saturday.
Stonehill opened its season with two Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 events at August Farm in Holliston, Saturday.
Kaitlin Kotfila (Hadley) qualified for regionals with her fourth-place finish in intermediate fences, as she returns as the reserve champion in Zone 1, Region 4 intermediate flat.
Molly McCutcheon (Florence) earned a runner-up ribbon in walk-trot-canter division.
Williams College Horse Show — Mount Holyoke placed first, followed by UMass, Saturday. Smith College was sixth. Hampshire and Amherst tied for seventh.
Anya Benson (Amherst Regional) was first in walk-trot-canter and Lacy Piper (Amherst Regional) was first in novice fences.
Sierra Dunn (Northampton) was third on novice fences.
New York University Fall Invitational — Morgan Yurosek tied for fifth as Amherst finished third, Sunday. Cortney Qui tied for 17th for Mount Holyoke (fourth).

Hadley Chase — The UMass men’s Varsity 8 placed first, while the women’s Varity 8 was fifth on the Connecticut River, Saturday.
Smith College’s Varsity 8 was 12th, while Mount Holyoke was 13th.
