NORTHAMPTON — Police have arrested a man for allegedly stealing two diamond necklaces from a local jeweler on Friday.

An unidentified man reportedly took the two necklaces — worth $6,875 in total — when an employee at Silverscape Designs wasn’t looking, according to a post on the Northampton Police Department’s Facebook page. After reviewing surveillance video, police say they observed a suspect who matched the description of the theft suspect on Center Street and arrested a 67-year-old man.

“During booking, officers located a bus pass to Springfield from around the same time that the necklaces were stolen,” the department wrote in the post. “They also located a receipt from a pawn shop in Springfield for a necklace that had been traded that day for $100. The necklaces were not immediately recovered.”

Police say they also found heroin on the man, and charged him with larceny over $1,200 and possession of a class A substance.

The man, whom the department did not identify, is being arraigned in Northampton District Court today.
