The Belchertown field hockey team gave Southwick a scare, but the Rams held on for a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament, Wednesday.

It was the first tournament game for the second-year program. The seventh-seeded Orioles trailed 2-1 at the half to No. 2 Southwick, which broke a 2-2 tie with 2 minutes left in the game.

Ashley Messier and Catherine Oโ€™Connell each scored a goal, while Kaleigh Cooper and Katherine Wrona had one assist apiece.

Abigail Rothstein made five saves for Belchertown, which finished the season 11-6-2.

Southwick (16-2-1) will play No. 3 Frontier Regional (11-5-3) in the semifinals next week.

It was the final game for Belchertown seniors Aurelia Delaney, Oโ€™Connell and Arianna Piedra.

Girls soccer

Amherst 4, Renaissance 3 โ€” Casey Flueckiger (assist), Rheannon Stewart (assist), Grace Farnham and Madison Layer each scored as the Hurricanes (1-17) closed their season with their first win, Tuesday.

Mildred Orellana and Hannah Keochakian each had one assist.

It was the final game for seniors Bona Lee, Jaime Hafner, Hattie Carolan, Andrea Morehouse, Farnham and Layer.
