The 11th-ranked UMass hockey team stayed perfect in Hockey East with a 5-1 win over New Hampshire, Saturday in Durham.

The Minutemen (6-1-0, 3-0-0 Hockey East) are off to their best start in eight seasons.

“I really like my hockey club,” UMass coach Greg Carvel said a release provided by the school. “I think we came in here tonight and we wanted to try and frustrate UNH and I thought, through the first period, we were doing a real good job of that. It’s tough to win on the road this league and UNH is a skilled team with speed. I thought we did a good job limiting their skill and their speed and their power play was something else I was worried about, our kill did a good job tonight.”

UMass jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Mitchell Chaffee tapped home a between-the-legs, backhand pass from Oliver Chau 7 minutes, 19 seconds into the first period.

Philip Lagunov made it 2-0 with assists from Jacob Pritchard and John Leonard about seven minutes later.

Cale Makar found the corner of the net in the second period with assists from Chaffee and Jake Gaudet for a 3-0 lead.

Leonard made it 4-0 with a power-play goal off assists from Makar and Chaffee.

Pritchard made it 5-1 late in the third with assists from Leonard and Ivan Chukarov.

UMass killed all three UNH power plays to extend its streak to 16 straight. The Minutemen outshot the Wildcats 22-20 and went 1-for-4 on the power play.

UMass has now scored in 20 of 22 periods this season.

Matt Murray made 19 saves to improve to 4-0-0 on the season.
