CHICOPEE — The Northampton football team dropped its fourth straight road game as Chicopee Comp handed the Blue Devils a 42-12 defeat, Friday night.
The Blue Devils (5-5) struggled on both sides of the ball. The defense was unable to stop the Colts’ offense, while the Blue Devils had trouble gaining first downs and putting drives together in the first half.
“We talked about it on the way here,” Northampton coach Joe Kocot said. “We haven’t won on the road all year, they travel like crap, as a coach I’ll take it as my fault, but many guys weren’t doing the stuff I called.”
Northampton was held scoreless in the first half as a result of its inability to execute plays and gain first downs.
The Colts scored on their first drive after stopping Northampton on fourth down.
Comp’s first touchdown came on a 7-yard run from Isaias Gomez that gave the Colts a 6-0 lead.
“It’s the worst game we played,” Kocot said. “Give credit to Comp, they played hard, they played fast, they played play after play after play, and we are just sitting there taking it.”
Northampton did not score until late in the third quarter. Its touchdown came after a 33-yard run from Devontay Edmunds, who broke multiple tackles and took the ball to the 1-yard line before being taken down. The Blue Devils went right back to Edmunds on first and second down to punch the ball in for a 1-yard touchdown.
After a long 55-yard touchdown from Travis Kagan to start the second half for the Colts, the Blue Devils started to play a little better than they had all game. They broke off long runs and put together drives, but still had trouble putting the ball in the end zone because of turnovers and failed fourth-down conversions.
“We wanted to do the counter which worked a little bit after the dive,” Kocot said. “It’s the ultimate test when you have two or three guys take a play off. It screws up all of the work and that’s what happened.”
The Blue Devils’ only other touchdown came late in the game from Braeden Tudryn on a 14-yard run up the middle where he broke free to find the end zone.
The Blue Devils’ last game is on Thanksgiving against Easthampton.
