HS basketball: Easthampton beats Hampshire in Pioneer Valley Tip-Off

Gabe Colenback splashed four 3-pointers and scored 17 points, as the Easthampton boys basketball team beat Hampshire, 51-36, Friday in the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off at UMass’ Curry Hicks Cage.

Ronan Mottor added 14 points, while Drew Caires scored nine for Easthampton (1-0). It was Easthampton’s third straight victory in the rivalry.

Justin Forest had 14 points for Hampshire (0-1), while freshman Luke Kraus added seven.

Smith Academy 74, St. Mary’s 37 — Jack Zigmont scored 27 points on the strength of 10 made free throws in a season-opening road win. Brett Gratz added 17, while Carter Woodward scored nine for the Falcons (1-0)

Sabis 70, Northampton 58 — Jaeden Johndrow scored 23 points, but the Blue Devils fell at home. Mike McCarthy added 11 for Northampton (0-1), while Jake Brittain had eight.

Girls basketball

Smith Vocational 36, Franklin Tech 25 — Sydney Cyr hit six 3-pointers and carried the Vikings to a win in the consolation game of the Eagles Holiday Tournament with 31 points. Ella Sherman added five for Smith Vocational (1-1).

Northampton 60, Agawam 42 — Lulu Kesin provided an outlet against the Brownies’ zone defense, hitting three 3s en route to 12 points. Amanda Mieczkowski led the Blue Devils (1-0) with 21 points. Jill McGrath chipped in 14. Northampton scored 23 points in the second quarter to pull away.

Hampshire 67, Mahar 40 — Maddie Pond scored 16 points, and Lila Labrie had 15, as the Raiders won at the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off at Curry Hicks Cage. The pair combined for 20 steals.

Jacqueline Babyak added nine points, and Delaney Marek scored eight.

Pioneer Regional 43, Easthampton 24 — Freshman Emma Downer had 10 points, while senior Val Murphy had nine points, seven rebounds and six blocks in her first game in 1½ years, but the Eagles fell in their opener at home.

Mount Everett 44, Hopkins Academy 38 — AJ Mitchell scored 12 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, but the Golden Hawks fell in the Eagles Holiday Tournament championship at Franklin Tech.

Samantha Jenks scored 11 points with five assists, but Mount Everett keyed on the Hopkins Academy (1-1) senior in the second half.

Westfield 48, Belchertown 47 (OT) — The Orioles missed eight free throws in the game’s final 12 minutes and lost at home.

They were up 16-8 early then suffered a 14-minute stretch with just three points.

“We just went stone, stone cold,” Belchertown coach Jason Woodcock said.

Belchertown (0-1) trailed by 10 late in the third but rallied to take a two-point lead with 30 seconds to go. On Westfield’s next possession, Belchertown deflected a pass right to a Bomber that tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Jenna Birks led Belchertown with 12 points. Sonia Dugger had nine rebounds and eight points. Elise Pikul added nine points.

Renaissance 54, Smith Academy 35 — Emma Kelly scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, but the Falcons lost their opener. Karlie Guimond added 11 pounds, seven boards and four steals for Smith Academy (0-1)
