NORTHAMPTON — Retail marijuana sales continue to pull in millions of dollars for the two legal pot shots that are currently open in the state. But those two stores will soon have competition.
The state’s Cannabis Control Commission on Monday released sales totals from yet another week of business for the two shops: New England Treatment Access in Northampton and Cultivate in Leicester. The stores raked in $2.2 million in sales from Dec. 3-9. That brings the total amount of sales since the shops opened to more than $7 million.
Northampton and Leicester will soon have competition from other stores, however. A third retail marijuana shop, Alternative Therapies Group in Salem, has received final licensing approval from the Cannabis Control Commission and could begin retail sales as soon as this weekend. And INSA, a medical dispensary located in Easthampton, has its final approval but must wait for the final go-ahead from the state before it can begin recreational sales.
Several other retailers are on the agenda to potentially receive their final approval at the Cannabis Control Commission’s meeting on Thursday. Among them are Temescal Wellness of Massachusetts, which hopes to open shops in Pittsfield and Hudson, Northeast Alternatives in Fall River and Theory Wellness in Great Barrington.
It has been more than two years since Massachusetts voters approved recreational marijuana in a 2016 ballot question.
