NORTHAMPTON — A pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle Monday at around 9 a.m. in downtown Northampton, temporarily shutting down one lane on Crafts Avenue, according to Northampton Police.
The woman hit by the vehicle reported minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to police. The driver, who struck the woman at the crosswalk at the intersection of Crafts Avenue and Old South Street, stayed at the scene and cooperated.
Carl Mahaney of Northampton, who witnessed the incident, said that he has become an avid pedestrian safety advocate as a result of walking around the city every day with his 3-year-old child and “being shocked at how unsafe it felt.”
Mahaney said he has observed that many people do not stop for stop signs, including the one at the site of Monday’s crash, creating a dangerous environment for pedestrians.
