Fru Che hit a go-ahead jumper with 8 seconds left as the Amherst College men’s basketball team beat rival Williams, 63-62, Wednesday at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Bobby Casey missed a potential game-winning jumper with 3 seconds for the Ephs (15-1).
Day finished with a team-high 12 points. Grant Robinson (six assists, five rebounds) and Che each had 11 points, while Eric Sellew had 10 points for the Mammoths (13-1).
Trailing by three, Sellew made a layup with 1:20 left to pull Amherst within 59-58. Day buried a 3 to give the Mammoths a 61-59 lead with 34 seconds left, but James Heskett answered with a 3 with 23 seconds remaining.
It was an emotional win for Amherst, which was playing without longtime head coach David Hixon, who was with his family following the death of his mother, Dawn, on Tuesday.
Assistant Aaron Toomey coached the Mammoths Wednesday.
“I told the guys that this was going to be a full-team effort, all 19 of us,” Toomey said. “That 19 includes coach and everything he has done for us and meant to us. He’s coached games in a wheelchair, in a boot, in a sling, but this was the first time he had ever missed a game, so we wanted to get it for him.”
George Mason 70, UMass 52 — Vashnie Perry had a season-high 13 points and Jessica George added 10 points, but the Minutewomen fell in front of 3,310 on Field Trip Day at the Mullins Center.
Hailey Leidel added nine points and seven rebounds for UMass (10-8, 2-2 Atlantic 10).
Amherst 65, Williams 54 — Maeve McNamara turned a four-point into seven with a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, and the Mammoths kept the Ephs at arm’s length the rest of the way in Williamstown.
Madeline Eck finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Hannah Fox had 18 points fro Amherst (14-1, 3-0 NESCAC).
McNamara had 10 points and Meghan Sullivan (Granby) chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.
Smith 82, Mount Holyoke 17 — Dashelle Gleissner had 12 points and five rebounds, while Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton) had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench as the Pioneers (11-5, 5-3 NEWMAC) rolled over the Lyons (1-16, 0-8) in South Hadley.
Annika Brooks had 11 points for Mount Holyoke.
