The Amherst Regional girls basketball team shut down Granby in the fourth quarter for a 39-31 victory, Thursday in Amherst.

The victory pulled the Hurricanes into a three-way first-place tie in the Central. Amherst and Granby are both 7-9 overall, 4-2 in the league. Monson is 9-7 overall and 4-2 after beating Palmer.

The Hurricanesโ€™ interior defense made the difference, according to coach Dustin James. Amherst held Nora Young (14 points) to three points in the final quarter, when Amherst outscored Granby 11-5.

Amherst was clutch from the line late. Delaney MacPhetres (15 points) made four free throws in the fourth, while Erin Klaes (10 points) had two and Mayouri Yath (eight points) one.

Central 61, Northampton 41 โ€” The Golden Eaglesโ€™ box-and-one defense in the second quarter stifled Amanda Mieczkowski and the Blue Devils.
