High schools: Zigmont hits for 30 as Smith Academy sinks Athol

Jack Zigmont hit four 3-pointers and scored 30 points, as the Smith Academy boys basketball team beat Athol, 76-44, on Friday.

Brett Gratz also had four 3-point shots and 20 points. Carter Woodward added 12 points. Smith Academy (7-11, 4-3 Hampshire North) outscored Athol 16-8 in the second quarter.

Zigmont is 19 points away from 1,000 in his career. The Falcons visit Westfield Tech at 7 p.m. Monday.

Smith Vocational 68, Westfield Tech 56 — Carlos Rivera had his first double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Andrew Pierce scored 14 points and Jaxson Venne put in 12 points. Tyler Top scored 11 points and Smith Voke (9-9, 7-0 Tri-County South) had 18 assists.

Holyoke 79, Amherst Regional 43 — Isa Mahal Castro McCauley and Sam Leonard each had eight points, but the Hurricanes (3-15, 1-7 Valley League) fell at home.

The Purple Knights (10-9, 4-5) qualified for the postseason with the win.

Greenfield 39, Frontier Regional 38 — Carsten Carey scored 11 points and Owen Morse put in 10 in the loss. With under a second left in the game, Jake Sak scored two free throws to secure the victory for Greenfield. Kalen Evans added eight points for the Red Hawks (16-3, 5-2 Hampshire North).

Easthampton 70, Ludlow 35 — Ronan Mottor scored 22 points in a road win. Jack Bacis scored 10 points. The Eagles (13-6, 7-0 Bi-County East) had early ball pressure and forced Ludlow to take many difficult shots.

Putnam 60, Northampton 40 — Jaeden Johndrow hit a 3 and scored 16 points in a road loss. Anthony DeJesus added eight points, and Jake Brittain had seven for the Blue Devils (9-10, 3-6 Valley).

Gateway Regional 44, St. Mary 37 — Evan Cortis scored 12 points and Ben Hyjek put in 11. Gateway (2-18, 2-6 Tri-County) was 3-for-12 on foul shots in the fourth quarter but was able to halt St. Mary’s comeback.

It was the final game for Gateway seniors Spenser Buckman and Brandon Krassler.

Girls basketball

Easthampton 49, Commerce 17 — Val Murphy scored 22 points and hit six 3s in a season-closing win for the Eagles (4-14) .

Emma Downer also hit three 3s and scored 16 points. Easthampton seniors Murphy, Isabel Navarro and Jen Waskiewicz played their final game for the Eagles.
