The Hampshire Regional wrestling team had five grapplers take to the mat on Day 1 of the State Division 3 Tournament, Friday in Wakefield.
All five will wrestle on Day 2, Saturday.
Kobe Clifford beat Jeremy Driscoll, of South Shore, 10-6, to reach the 182-pound quarterfinals, where he was pinned by Mike Yirrell, of Wakefield, in 4 minutes, 56 seconds. Clifford will face Josh Stevens, of Triton, to start Day 2.
Michael Baldwin beat Nicholas Andreasen, of Norton, 7-0, to reach the 160 quarterfinals, where he fell 8-5 to Matt Mansfield, of Georgetown-Ipswich. Baldwin faces Mike Pusky, of Taconic, to open the second round of consolation play.
Alex Willard fell in his opening match at 106 as Connor OโBrien, of Marblehead/Swampscott, got the pin in 3:07. Willard beat Jose Aguilar, of Watertown, 9-7, in the consolation bracket. Willard will wrestle Lisandro Martinez, of Hampden Charter, to open Saturday.
Angus KaneLong was pinned in 43 seconds by Arthur OโNeill, of Norton, in his 285 opener. KaneLong pinned Allen Smith, of Keefe Tech, in 15 seconds to remain alive. KaneLong will face William McNeil, of Foxborough, to open Day 2.
Mason Willard lost 6-3 to Jason Young, of Pentucket, then stayed alive at 170 with a pin of Drew Hansen, of Tri-County, in 5:14. Willard faces Dave Harding, of Holliston, next on Saturday.
Four out of five Frontier Regional wrestlers advanced to Saturday.
Ovidiu Nichita was pinned by Tre Aulson, of Georgetown-Ipswich, in 1:04 in his opening match at 113. Nichita pinned Kenny Stolgitis, of Quabbin, in 2:15 to stay alive. He will face Jorge Maldonado, of Marblehead/Swampscott, on Day 2.
Ito McMillan fell 15-0 to Sean Herbert, of Melrose, in their 152 opener. McMillian won by forfeit over Pat Brown, of Hanover/Norwell, to advance and face Lado Tserelov, of Cohasset, in his first match on Saturday.
Jackie Phong dropped his opener at 285 to Kurtees Poisson, of Bristol-Plymouth/Coyle Cassidy, who earned the pin in 40 seconds. Phong stayed alive with a pin of Nathan Ickes, of Wakefield, in 3:27. Phong will face Sean Harding, of Ashland, on Saturday.
Nate Austin was pinned by Peter Calogero, of Middleborough, in 3:02 at 195. Austin rallied and pinned John Hicks, of Athol, in 53 seconds. Austin will face Jack Long, of Hanover/Norwell, Saturday.
Jake Mattson went 0-2 at 138 for Frontier.
Two out of four South Hadley westlers advanced.
Alex Schenker, of South Hadley, fell in 1:02 to Chase Anestis, of Bedford/Acton-Boxborough, in the 152 opening round. Schenker recovered and pinned Rocklandโs Tommy Tashjian in 4:30 and will face Korey Scheffen, of Pentucket, on Saturday.
South Hadleyโs Joe Podolak won his opening match at 132, 3-1 over Kevin Keegan, of Sandwich. Podolak was then pinned in 3:09 by Patrick Griffin, of Tri-County. Podolak will face Logan Dubois, of Southwick, on Saturday in the next round.
Cayden Henriques (106) and Jacey Rondeau (182) each went 0-2 for the Tigers.
Smith Vocational teammates James Buddluph (182) and Zach Hall (220) competed. Buddluph beat Christian Beer, of Nauset, 7-5, but was pinned by Chris Waslaske, of Athol, in 1:23. Buddluph will face Joe Donoghue, of Cohasset, on Saturday.
Hall went 0-2 in his weight class.
Granby sent Emmett Seibert (106) and Joseph Deprey (113) to states. Seibert opened with a 5-2 loss to Chris Montes, of Triton. He beat Sean Bubencik, of Foxborough, 16-1, to advance to Saturday when he will wrestle Shayne Galvin, of Cohasset.
Deprey finished 0-2.
Northampton sent two wrestlers to Methuen for the Division 1 tournament.
Noah Brink won his first match at 145, 6-2, over Spencer Wallace, of Lincoln-Sudbury. Brink fell to the consolation bracket following a 9-4 loss to Vincent Foti, of Shawsheen.
Brink will open Day 2 of the tournament Saturday with a match against Eric Bergeron, of West Springfield. It is the second straight year Brink advanced at states.
Maddox McPherson went 0-2 at 120 pounds for Northampton.
