SUNDERLAND — The Sunderland police chief on Monday was waiting to hear from the State Police about the autopsy results of a man found dead on Mount Toby Sunday.
Erik Demetropoulos said late Monday that state troopers were on their way to find out if the cause of death had been determined, and the deceased man’s next of kin were being notified.
“We’re in that middle holding pattern,” Demetropoulos said. “We still have not gotten anything concrete.”
The body, found in a wedge-like area near a cliff face on the west side of Mount Toby, was discovered around 12:45 p.m. by two hikers, who called 911. The man was confirmed dead following an investigation by the Sunderland police and fire departments and South County EMS paramedics.
Multiple agencies and two drones from Greenfield were involved in the hourslong recovery that ended around dusk. The drones were used to ensure rescuers’ safety. Trail entrances were narrow, requiring first responders to use ATVs, snowmobiles and utility vehicles to get themselves and their equipment to the site.
