Billy Philpott and Gabriel Procyk both scored hat tricks to lead UMass to a 14-8 road win over Albany in nonconference men’s lacrosse action, Tuesday.

The Minutemen (2-3) separated themselves from the Great Danes in the third quarter by scoring the first four goals to build a six-goal lead. Chris Connolly registered all three of his assists during that stretch.

Kevin Cutinella and Devin Spencer both scored twice and dished out two assists for four points. Sean Sconone made 16 saves in the cage for UMass, seven of which came in the final quarter.

Amherst 16, Western New England 11 — The fifth-ranked Mammoths used a dominant third quarter to pull away for the road win over the Golden Bears in Springfield.

Matt Solberg scored three of his four goals in the deciding quarter as Amherst (2-0) outscored Western New England 6-2 to build a five-goal lead. Evan Wolf also scored four times for the Mammoths and Colin Minicus netted three goals to go along with two assists.

Women’s lacrosse

Smith 17, Eastern Connecticut State 11 — Chloe Harris scored four times while Northampton graduate Emily Biggs and Reese Gittelman each tallied hat tricks to lead Smith past Eastern Connecticut State in Northampton.

The Pioneers (2-0) owned the draw control circle with a 22-6 advantage, led by seven from Gittelman. Smith also more than doubled Eastern Connecticut State in shots with a 46-21 margin.

Amherst 13, Springfield 3 — The Mammoths scored the first 11 goals of the game in a home rout of the Pride.

No. 13 Amherst (1-1) led Springfield 7-0 at halftime and didn’t concede until 14:39 remained in the game. Claire Dunbar scored a hat trick and dished out two assists to lead the Mammoths’ offense in the win.

Westfield State 13, Mount Holyoke 9 — Westfield State scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to thwart Mount Holyoke’s second-half rally in Westfield.

The Lyons (1-2) scored three straight goals to cut the deficit to two with 14 minutes left, but the Owls scored the next three goals to preserve the victory. Northampton graduate Abby Baldwin scored five goals and corralled seven draw controls for Mount Holyoke in the loss. Fellow Northampton native Haley Subocz also scored for the Lyons.
