NORTHAMPTON –

Musician, educator, activist and gospel singer Jane Wilburn Sapp, author of “Let’s Make a Better World,” made a special visit to Jackson Street School on Friday, March 22, 2019, in advance of her guest performance with the Amandla Chorus on Saturday at Edwards Church.

A Georgia native who lived and taught in Springfield for several years, Sapp was a field researcher for the Smithsonian Institution’s African Diaspora Program early in her career and in 1975 founded the Black Folk Roots Festival in Alabama, which continues today.

On Friday morning, Sapp first energized a score of fifth-graders in Kim O’Connell’s music class at Jackson Street in lively renditions of three songs. Then she was treated to – and joined in on – a sing-along with kindergarten and first grade students led by kindergarten teacher Jen Reed.
