NORTHAMPTON — Police on Sunday arrested a man they say smashed a window and took $5,000 worth of merchandise from Hannoush Jewelers, 227 Main St.

Orlando Wright, 45, of the streets of Northampton, has been charged with larceny over $1,200, destruction of property over $1,200, and breaking and entry in the daytime with the intent to commit a felony.

Police say they expect Wright to be arraigned in court Monday.

Police were dispatched at 6:28 a.m. for a report of a breaking and entering at the store. A witness reported hearing glass break and then seeing a man walking swiftly away from the store toward Pulaski Park, police said.

The store was not open at the time.

At the store, police said, they found a broken window and bloodstains, apparently left by the suspect while retrieving jewelry, and police were able to follow part of the blood trail. Police also said another witness saw a man running toward the Roundhouse parking lot, and that blood droplets were subsequently found there.

Police allege that at around 7:25 a.m., Staff Sgt. Pat Moody, working a detail at NETA, saw a man who matched the description of the suspect. Moody subsequently stopped Wright, and allegedly saw that his hand was bleeding.

Other officers were called in, and it is alleged that approximately $5,000 in stolen jewelry was found on Wright.
