SOUTHAMPTON — Peebles, the department store chain on College Highway, is closing in January 2020.

The store is closing because it is “underperforming,” according to Sydney Edens, a spokeswoman with Lukas Partners, a public relations firm hired by Peebles. A banner at the front of the store advertising a closing sale went up recently.

Edens declined to say how many stores Peebles is closing but noted that the North Adams store will remain open.

“It’s disappointing to see any business go,” Town Administrator Ed Gibson said on Tuesday. “In this case, Peebles has been around for a while.”

Gibson said he’s noticed retail stores in general closing due to the rising popularity of online shopping.

“Hopefully another retail store or company will come along and go in that space so that it’s not vacant for very long,” Gibson said.

The store opened in November 2007 and employs 10 people. Employees at Peebles were unable to comment for the story per company policy.
